What is manganese measured for?

Manganese (Mn) is a naturally occurring heavy metal that is frequently found in groundwater and surface waters. The limit value for drinking water is 0.05 mg/l Mn (Drinking Water Ordinance).

Elevated manganese concentrations lead to black-brown deposits in pipes, discoloration of the water and a metallic taste. In waterworks, manganese must be reliably removed, as even low concentrations can lead to operational disruptions.

Manganese can cause deposits and corrosion in cooling water systems and industrial treatment. Regular monitoring is therefore essential.

How does the test set work?

The CALDUR® Manganese Test Set – Colorimetric is based on the formaldoxime method. After adding three reagents to the water sample, a colored complex is formed within 10 minutes, the intensity of which is proportional to the manganese concentration.

The measured value is determined by direct color comparison with a supplied color chart.

Advantages of the CALDUR® test set

  • Sensitive measuring range 0.03 – 1.0 mg/l Mn

Already detects concentrations below the drinking water limit value

  • 100 provisions per set

    Economical for regular checks

  • Proven formaldoxime method

    Selective for manganese, low interference

  • Easy handling with color card

Fast on-site determination without measuring devices

  • Robust plastic housing with hinged lid

Safe transportation and protection of reagents

Areas of application

Pond / lake
Groundwater / well water
Drinking / tap water
Aquaristics
Pool / Swimming pool
Industrial processing
Boiler water
Food preparation
Waste water treatment

Carrying out the measurement:

  1. Fill water sample into test tubes up to the 10 ml mark
  2. Add 5 drops of reagent A and mix
  3. Add 5 drops of reagent B and mix
  4. Add 3 drops of reagent C and mix
  5. Wait for 10 minutes reaction time
  6. Perform color comparison with color chart

Tip for best results

The sample should be measured immediately after collection, as dissolved manganese(II) can be oxidized to manganese(IV) on contact with atmospheric oxygen and then precipitates as brown manganese oxide. Do not filter Truebe samples before measurement if the total manganese content is to be determined.

Important notes

  • Measure the sample immediately after taking it – manganese oxidizes in the air
  • Adhere exactly to the reaction time of 10 minutes
  • Avoid direct sunlight during the measurement
  • Iron >5 mg/l can interfere with the measurement
  • Thoroughly rinse the test tube with the sample before each measurement

Measuring range

Measuring level Description
0.03 mg/l Very low concentration (pale yellow)
0.05 mg/l Drinking water limit value (light yellow)
0.1 mg/l Increased concentration (yellow)
0.2 mg/l Significantly increased concentration (strong yellow)
0.5 mg/l High concentration (yellow-orange)
1.0 mg/l Very high concentration (orange)
Read intermediate values:
If the color lies between two fields, you can form the mean value
(e.g. between 0.1 and 0.2 mg/l = approx. 0.15 mg/l).

Number of possible destinations

You can carry out 100 measurements with one CALDUR® Manganese Test Set.
This refers to the quantity of reagents contained.

Measuring accuracy and reproducibility

Readability: ± 1 color level
Reproducibility: Very good if the application instructions are followed
Interference: Iron in high concentrations (>5 mg/l) can influence the result. If samples are heavily colored (e.g. by humic substances), the color reading may be more difficult. In these cases, a photometric determination is recommended.

What to do if measured values are out of range?

Measured value > 1.0 mg/l

Verduction Execution Calculation of the measured value
1:1 5 ml sample + 5 ml manganese-free water Measured value × 2
1:4 2 ml sample + 8 ml manganese-free water Measured value × 5

Measured value < 0.03 mg/l

The measured value is below the detection limit. This is a good result for drinking water, as the limit value of 0.05 mg/l is safely adhered to.
