What is phosphate HR measured for?

In many industrial applications, phosphates are used in significantly higher concentrations than in drinking water. In boiler water, the typical phosphate target value is 10-30 mg/l PO₄³-, depending on the operating pressure and type of system.

Phosphate acts as a hardness stabilizer in boiler water – it binds calcium and magnesium and thus prevents the formation of scale. Too low a dosage leads to deposits, too high a dosage leads to increased sludge formation.

Phosphates are used as corrosion inhibitors in cooling water systems in concentrations of 5-50 mg/l. Regular monitoring ensures optimum dosing.

How does the test set work?

The CALDUR® Phosphate HR Test Set – Photometric is based on the molybdate method. After adding a reagent to the water sample, a yellow color complex (phosphorus molybdate) is formed within 1 minute, the concentration of which is precisely determined with the WINLAB Data Line photometer.

Advantages of the CALDUR® test set

  • Wide measuring range 2.5 – 100 mg/l PO₄³-

Ideal for boiler water and industrial applications

  • 100 provisions per set

    Economical for regular checks

  • Fast response time of just 1 minute

    Immediate results for process control

  • Proven molybdate method

    Reliable and specific for orthophosphate

Areas of application

Pond / lake
Groundwater / well water
Drinking / tap water
Aquaristics
Pool / Swimming pool
Industrial processing
Boiler water
Food preparation
Waste water treatment

Carrying out the measurement:

  1. Fill the round cuvette with sample up to the 10 ml mark
  2. Add 5 drops of reagent A and mix
  3. Wait for 1 minute reaction time
  4. Insert the cuvette into the WINLAB Data Line photometer
  5. Start measurement – result is displayed directly in mg/l PO₄³-

Tip for best results

Boiler water samples must be cooled to room temperature before measurement. Hot samples falsify the result. The sample should be clear and free of suspended solids.

Important notes

  • Allow sample to cool to room temperature before measuring
  • Adhere exactly to the reaction time of 1 minute
  • Wipe the cuvette with a lint-free cloth before measuring
  • Use the LR test kit for concentrations below 2.5 mg/l
  • Only orthophosphate is recorded
  • Requires WINLAB Data Line photometer (Art. 37-000100)

Measuring range

Property Value
Measuring range 2.5 to 100 mg/l PO₄³-
Dissolution 0.5 mg/l
Method Molybdate method, photometric evaluation
Advantage of photometric measurement:
In contrast to the colorimetric method (color chart), the photometer provides exact numerical values with a higher resolution. Intermediate values are calculated automatically – ideal for documentation and quality assurance.

Number of possible destinations

With one CALDUR® Test Set Phosphate HR Photometric you can carry out 100 measurements.
This refers to the quantity of reagents contained.

Recommended dosing ranges

Application Recommended phosphate content
Low pressure boiler (< 20 bar) 20 – 50 mg/l PO₄³-
Medium pressure vessel (20-60 bar) 10 – 30 mg/l PO₄³-
Cooling water 5 – 20 mg/l PO₄³-
Note:
The optimum dosage depends on the type of system and the operating conditions. Consult the water chemist or the dosing system documentation for system-specific target values.

What to do if measured values are out of range?

Measured value > 100 mg/l

Verduction Execution Calculation of the measured value
1:1 5 ml sample + 5 ml phosphate-free water Measured value × 2

Measured value < 2.5 mg/l

Use the CALDUR® Phosphate LR test set (31-073412) for lower concentrations from 0.4 mg/l.
