CALDUR® PM Value Scientific Test Set – Syringe titration

What is the PM value measured for?

The PM value (p-value and m-value) describes the acid and base capacity of water and is a central parameter in boiler water and cooling water monitoring.

The p-value (phenolphthalein value) indicates the base capacity up to pH 8.2 and shows the concentration of hydroxide and carbonate ions. It is particularly important for monitoring alkalinity in boiler water and cooling water systems.

The m-value (methyl orange value) indicates the total alkalinity up to pH 4.3 and also includes the hydrogen carbonate ions. It is a measure of the total acid capacity of the water.

The Scientific series from CALDUR® offers maximum precision and user-friendliness thanks to the innovative syringe titration. Intermediate values can be read directly on the scale without having to count drops.

How does the test set work?

The CALDUR® PM-Wert Scientific test set uses a precise dosing syringe for titration. The water sample is mixed with the reagents, then the titration solution is added with the syringe. The measured value is read directly from the syringe scale – no drop counting required!

The measuring range covers 0-20 mmol/l for the p-value and m-value. The stepless reading enables a significantly higher precision than conventional drop titrations.

Advantages of the CALDUR® test set

  • Quick analysis in just 1 minute

Ideal for regular checks – faster than conventional drip titrations

  • Highest precision through syringe titration

Stepless reading enables intermediate values – no drop counting required

  • Measuring range 0-20 mmol/l

Covers the entire field of practical relevance

  • Approx. 100 provisions per set

Particularly economical due to high number of possible measurements

  • p-value and m-value can be determined

Comprehensive alkalinity determination with one test kit

Areas of application

Pond / lake
Groundwater / well water
Drinking / tap water
Aquaristics
Pool / Swimming pool
Industrial processing
Boiler water
Food preparation
Waste water treatment

Carrying out the measurement:

Determination of the p-value:

  1. Fill water sample into test tubes
  2. Add Reagent 1 (p-value) and mix
  3. Fill dosing syringe with titration solution
  4. Slowly add the titration solution while swirling until the color changes
  5. Read the p-value directly from the syringe scale

Determination of the m-value:

  1. Add Reagent 2 (m value) to the same sample and mix
  2. Continue adding titration solution until the second color change occurs
  3. Read off the m value on the syringe scale (total consumption)

Tip for best results

The scientific method allows continuous reading. Add the titration solution slowly and observe the color change closely. Intermediate values can be read precisely.

Important notes

  • Add the reagents in the specified order
  • Add titration solution slowly – do not dose too quickly
  • For heavily colored samples: Filter the sample
  • Rinse dosing syringe with distilled water after use

Measuring range

Property Value
Measuring range p-value 0 – 20 mmol/l
Measuring range m-value 0 – 20 mmol/l
Resolution Stepless (syringe scale)
Advantage of syringe titration:
In contrast to drop titration, intermediate values can be read off precisely on the syringe scale. This enables significantly higher accuracy.

Number of possible destinations

With a CALDUR® test set PM-Wert Scientific you can carry out approx. 100 measurements.

Measuring accuracy and reproducibility

Readability: Infinitely variable on the syringe scale
Reproducibility: Very good if the application instructions are followed
Interference: Heavily colored or true samples can make the color change more difficult. In this case, filter the sample.
