What is silicate measured for?

Silicate (SiO₂) is a dissolved ingredient that occurs in almost all natural waters. Monitoring the silicate concentration is particularly important in the following areas:

  • Power plants and steam generation: At high temperatures and pressures, silicate forms extremely hard, glass-like deposits on turbine blades and in steam pipes. These deposits are almost impossible to remove and lead to considerable efficiency losses.
  • Boiler feed water: Even low silicate concentrations can cause damage in the high-pressure range. Typical limit values are in the range of a few µg/l.
  • Reverse osmosis systems: Silicate can irreversibly foul membranes (silica fouling). Monitoring the permeate protects against costly membrane damage.
  • Mixed bed ion exchanger: Control of the exchange capacity – silicate is often one of the first parameters to break through during depletion.

How does the Reagent work?

The silicate Reagents consist of a reagent set with several components for fully automatic silicate determination with the SYCON SiO₂ analyzer. The device automatically takes a water sample, adds the reagents in the correct order and quantity and measures the coloration photometrically.

Two measuring ranges are available: Low Range (0.02-10 mg/l) for the trace range and High Range (10-150 mg/l) for higher concentrations.

Changing reagents on the device

Several reagents are required for the silicate measurement. All bottles are connected to the SYCON SiO₂ at the same time. Only use bottles with a capacity of 500 ml.

Procedure

⚠ Wear protective gloves! Avoid skin contact with the reagents at all costs.
  1. Deactivate automatic mode on the device.
  2. Loosen the screw caps on the bottles and insert new reagent bottles – absorb any drips.
  3. Flush the measuring chamber (menu > Service > Manual flushing).
  4. Pump the Reagent into the measuring chamber (menu > Service > Pump Reagent) until all reagents arrive bubble-free. Confirm with [OK].
  5. Indication of whether full bottles have been inserted (fill level indicator).
  6. Rinse the measuring chamber again and test the analysis procedure by starting an analysis.
  7. Activate automatic mode again.

Important notes

  • Check the expiration date on the bottles before use – only use reagents that have not exceeded their expiry date.
  • When switching between Low Range and High Range, the device must be reconfigured accordingly.
  • Low Range requires 3 reagents (A, B, C), High Range only 2 (B, C).
  • If you have any questions about the configuration, please contact our technical support.

Measuring range

Reagent Measuring range (mg/l SiO₂) Item no. (set) Composition (4-pack)
Low Range 0,02 – 10 32-010100 2x A, 1x B, 1x C
High Range 10 – 150 32-010110 2x B, 2x C
Reagent composition:
Low Range requires reagents A, B and C. High Range requires reagent B and C only. Single bottles: A = 32-010101, B = 32-010102, C = 32-010103.

What to do if measured values are out of range?

Measured value > 10 mg/l (when using Low Range)

Change to the High Range reagent set for the extended measuring range up to 150 mg/l. The device must be reconfigured accordingly.

Measured value < 10 mg/l (when using High Range)

Change to the Low Range reagent set for more precise measurements in the trace range.
