What is iron measured for?

Iron (Fe) is one of the most common elements in water and can be of natural origin or enter the water through corrosion of pipes. Monitoring the iron concentration is essential in many areas:

  • Drinking water treatment: The limit value for drinking water is 0.2 mg/l Fe (Drinking Water Ordinance). Elevated iron levels lead to undesirable discoloration and a metallic taste.
  • Boiler feed water: Iron causes deposits in boilers and steam systems, which can lead to corrosion damage.
  • Cooling water: Iron deposits reduce the heat transfer capacity and clog pipes.
  • Waterworks: monitoring of iron removal – checking whether iron filters are working properly.

How does the Reagent work?

The Fe Reagents are liquid color reagents for fully automatic iron determination with the SYCON Fe analyzer. The device automatically takes a water sample, adds the Reagent and measures the coloration photometrically.

Two measuring ranges are available: The LRS (Low Range) Reagent for low concentrations (0.01-0.5 mg/l) and the HRS (High Range) Reagent for higher concentrations (0.2-6.0 mg/l).

Changing the indicator on the device

Only use indicator bottles with a capacity of 500 ml. The bottles can be changed directly on the SYCON Fe analyzer without tools.

Procedure

⚠ Wear protective gloves! Avoid skin contact with the reagent at all costs.
  1. Deactivate automatic mode on the device.
  2. Loosen the screw cap on the bottle and insert a new indicator bottle – absorb any drips.
  3. Flush the measuring chamber (menu > Service > Manual flushing).
  4. Pump the Reagent into the measuring chamber (menu > Service > Pump Reagent) until the Reagent arrives free of bubbles. Confirm with [OK].
  5. Indicates whether a full bottle has been inserted (fill level indicator).
  6. Rinse the measuring chamber again and test the analysis procedure by starting an analysis.
  7. Activate automatic mode again.

Important notes

  • Check the expiration date on the bottle before use – only use Reagent that has not expired.
  • When switching between LRS and HRS, the device must be reconfigured accordingly.

Note:
The drinking water limit value for iron is 0.2 mg/l (TrinkwV). We recommend the Fe LRS Reagent for monitoring in the drinking water sector.

What to do if measured values are out of range?

Measured value > 0.5 mg/l (when using Fe LRS)

Switch to the Fe HRS Reagent for the extended measuring range up to 6.0 mg/l. The device must be reconfigured accordingly.

Measured value < 0.2 mg/l (when using Fe HRS)

Switch to the Fe LRS Reagent for more precise measurements in the low concentration range.

Storage conditions

Store in a cool, dry and dark place. Do not freeze. Protect from direct sunlight.
Shelf life: 24 months from date of manufacture (see label on the bottle). Use as soon as possible after opening.
