What is the p-value measured for?
The p-value (also acid capacity up to pH 8.2 or m-value/alkalinity) describes the concentration of hydroxide and carbonate ions in the water. It is a decisive parameter in boiler water and cooling water chemistry:
- Boiler water: The p-value is a key parameter for correct alkalization. Too low values lead to corrosion, too high values can cause foaming and overflow problems.
- Steam and condensate systems: Monitoring the p-value ensures that the alkalization remains in the optimum range.
- Cooling water systems: The p-value influences the corrosion and limescale separation behavior.
- Industrial process water: Control of water chemistry in closed circuits.
How does the Reagent work?
The P25 Reagents are liquid color reagents for fully automated p-value determination with the SYCON P analyzer. The device automatically takes a water sample, precisely doses the Reagent and measures the resulting coloration photometrically.
Two measuring ranges are available: P25-5 for the low range (0.2-5.0 mmol/l) and P25-20 for higher concentrations (0.8-20.0 mmol/l).

Areas of application
Changing the indicator on the device
Only use indicator bottles with a capacity of 500 ml. They can be changed directly on the SYCON P analyzer without tools.
Procedure
- Deactivate automatic mode on the device.
- Loosen the screw cap on the bottle and insert a new indicator bottle – absorb any drips.
- Flush the measuring chamber (menu > Service > Manual flushing).
- Pump the Reagent into the measuring chamber (menu > Service > Pump Reagent) until the Reagent arrives free of bubbles. Confirm with [OK].
- Indicates whether a full bottle has been inserted (fill level indicator).
- Rinse the measuring chamber again and test the analysis procedure by starting an analysis.
- Activate automatic mode again.
Important notes
- Check the expiration date on the bottle before use – only use Reagent that has not expired.
- When switching between P25-5 and P25-20, the device must be reconfigured accordingly.

For most boiler water applications in the low-pressure range, the P25-5 Reagent is sufficient. For high pressure boilers or higher alkalized water we recommend the P25-20.
What to do if measured values are out of range?
Measured value > 5.0 mmol/l (when using P25-5)
Change to the P25-20 Reagent for the extended measuring range up to 20 mmol/l. The device must be reconfigured accordingly.
Measured value < 0.8 mmol/l (when using P25-20)
Change to the P25-5 Reagent for more precise measurements in the low range.

Storage conditions
Store in a cool, dry and dark place. Do not freeze. Protect from direct sunlight.
Shelf life: 24 months from date of manufacture (see label on the bottle). Use as soon as possible after opening.
