Nitrate (NO₃⁻) and nitrite (NO₂⁻) are important nitrogen compounds in water analysis. The limit value for nitrate in drinking water is 50 mg/l, for nitrite 0.5 mg/l (German Drinking Water Ordinance). Both parameters must be monitored regularly.
Nitrate enters groundwater and surface water mainly through agricultural fertilisation and wastewater. Elevated nitrate concentrations can be harmful to infants (methaemoglobinaemia) and indicate contamination of the water catchment area.
Nitrite is formed as an intermediate product in the bacterial conversion of ammonium to nitrate (nitrification) and is more toxic than nitrate. In drinking water pipes, nitrite can form due to stagnation and bacterial activity.
The MN nitrate/nitrite test strips determine both parameters simultaneously in a single measurement – ideal for a quick orientation test.
The test strips have two separate reaction zones: one for nitrate and one for nitrite. Both zones change colour when dipped into the sample according to the respective concentration. By comparing the colour with the printed scale, both values are read off simultaneously.
Nitrate reading: Colour scale with steps 0 / 10 / 25 / 50 / 100 / 250 / 500 mg/l NO₃⁻.
Nitrite reading: Colour scale with steps 0 / 1 / 5 / 10 / 20 / 40 / 80 mg/l NO₂⁻.
Nitrate AND nitrite in a single measurement – time-saving and practical
Immediate results without reagents or instruments
Particularly economical for regular checks
Nitrate 0-500 mg/l, nitrite 0-80 mg/l – covers all practically relevant ranges
No mixing, no drops, no waste
Make sure to wet both reaction zones completely. The nitrite zone usually reacts faster than the nitrate zone. Wait for the full reaction time before reading the result.
