What is the total hardness measured with LHV?

The LHV series (LIMES hardness method) has been specially developed for total hardness measurement with analyzers from the LIMES series. The LIMES devices work purely as limit value monitors and continuously monitor whether a defined limit value is exceeded or not reached.

Typical areas of application:

  • Softeners: Monitoring of the drain water after ion exchangers – immediate detection of resin breakthroughs.
  • Boiler feed water: Ensure that the required residual hardness is maintained in order to avoid limescale deposits.
  • Reverse osmosis systems: Continuous control of the permeate quality.
  • Drinking water treatment: Automated quality assurance of water quality.

The LIMES system offers a cost-effective solution for automatic hardness monitoring, which reliably alarms as soon as a limit value is exceeded.

How does the Reagent work?

The LHV indicators are liquid color reagents for automatic limit value monitoring with LIMES analyzers (LIMES Base, LIMES Plus). The device automatically takes a water sample, adds the Reagent and evaluates the color reaction.

In contrast to measuring range devices, the LIMES system does not provide exact measured values, but monitors whether the set limit value is adhered to. If the limit value is exceeded, an alarm is triggered – ideal for the reliable monitoring of softening systems.

Advantages of the LHV series

  • 4 limit value levels from 0.1 to 7 °dH

    Suitable sensitivity for different applications

  • Specially developed for LIMES analyzers

Optimum adjustment to the LIMES measuring principle

  • Reliable limit value monitoring around the clock

Immediate alarm when limit values are exceeded

  • 750 ml bottles – larger volume for longer service life

    Less frequent indicator changes

  • In-house production and individual batch calibration

Consistently high quality – Made in Germany

  • 24 months shelf life from production

    Cost-efficient stockpiling

Changing the indicator on the device

Only use indicator bottles with a capacity of 750 ml. They can be changed directly on the LIMES analyzer without tools.

Procedure

Wearing protective gloves is recommended.
  1. Deactivate automatic mode on the device.
  2. Remove the empty or old indicator bottle.
  3. Insert a new bottle – absorb any drips.
  4. Activate automatic mode again.
  5. Ensure that Reagent enters the measuring chamber free of bubbles.

Important notes

  • Check the expiration date on the bottle before use – only use Reagent that has not expired.
  • When changing to a different limit value, the device must be reconfigured accordingly.
  • If you have any questions about the configuration, please contact our technical support.

Limit values and measuring ranges

Reagent Limit value (°dH) Measuring range (°dH) Article no. (1x 750 ml) Article no. (4x 750 ml)
LHV-0.1 0,1 0,01 – 0,18 32-074135 32-474135
LHV-0.5 0,5 0,05 – 0,90 32-074165 32-474165
LHV-3 3 0,30 – 5,30 32-074195 32-474195
LHV-7 7 0,70 – 10,00 32-074210 32-474210
Note on the measuring principle:
The LIMES devices work as limit value monitors. The specified measuring range describes the range in which the device detects a color reaction. The primary function is to reliably monitor whether the limit value is observed.
Unit conversion:
1 °dH = 17.8 ppm CaCO₃ = 1.78 °f (French degrees of hardness) = 1.25 °e (English degrees of hardness).

What to do if measured values are out of range?

Limit value set too low

Change to an Reagent with a higher limit value (e.g. from LHV-0.1 to LHV-0.5). The device must be reconfigured accordingly.

Limit value set too high

Change to a Reagent with a lower limit value for more sensitive monitoring.
