Light curtain D version

The automatic restart system (WBS) in the D version is the RLS Wacon light curtain for escalators and moving walks made by Kone and Otis. It automatically releases an escalator again after an emergency stop has been activated and monitors the presence of people on the unit in accordance with EN 115.

The light curtain consists of transmitter and receiver modules that are connected via cables to form chains. Each transmitter or receiver chain is terminated by an active end module. Evaluation is performed by the TLCU22-04 central unit, which is connected to the module chains via adapter cables. Compared with the discontinued MO version, the D version offers an improved connection system that simplifies installation, maintenance and repair; additional connecting elements are no longer needed.

The cost-optimised D version (rev.) offers identical functionality and safety. The module housing is marked directly to show whether it is a transmitter or receiver, and cost-effective 3-module and 7-module chains are available.

Features

  • automatic restart system according to EN 115:2008
  • safety light grid Cat. 4 / SIL 3, TÜV type-examined
  • up to 99 light barriers per escalator side (approx. 30 m)
  • self-monitoring and self-configuring
  • independent of ambient light, no wearing parts
  • protection class IP67, temperature range −20 … +65 °C
  • Original RUDOLPH design

Note: The TLCU22-04 central unit is required for evaluation and is included in the system. One stainless steel holder is required per module.

Field of use

Automatic restart systems (WBS) are used on escalators and moving walks in public and commercial passenger transport and automatically release the unit again after an emergency stop as soon as nobody is on it any more. The D version is designed for escalators made by Kone and Otis.

Operating principle

The light curtain uses up to 99 light barriers to create a vertical safety light grid across the escalator. Each light barrier consists of a transmitter module and a receiver module; if a person interrupts a light beam, the TLCU central unit detects the occupancy and withholds the release. The system works independently of ambient light and is self-monitoring and self-configuring according to EN 115:2008 (Cat. 4 / SIL 3).

Installation

  1. Mount transmitter and receiver modules opposite each other on both sides of the escalator – one stainless steel holder per module.
  2. Connect the modules via cables or pre-assembled chains to form the transmitter and receiver chains.
  3. Fit one active end module at the end of each chain.
  4. Connect the transmitter and receiver chains to the TLCU22-04 central unit via the matching adapter cables (4 m).
  5. Switch on the system – the light curtain configures itself and shows its status on the central unit.

Maintenance & cleaning

  • Regularly inspect the modules and optical surfaces visually.
  • Clean dirty optics with a soft, lint-free cloth – no aggressive cleaning agents.
  • Check the status display of the central unit; faults are displayed and output.
  • No wearing parts – very low maintenance effort; defective modules can be replaced individually with minimal tools.

Tip for service work

With the external service display (art. no. 80-200231), the status of the central unit can be read conveniently directly at the escalator during service work – it can be positioned optimally via a 4 m cable that can be extended up to 20 m.

Important notes

  • Only use the version that matches the escalator type – D version for Kone and Otis.
  • Align transmitter and receiver exactly opposite each other.
  • One stainless steel holder is required per module.
  • The TLCU22-04 central unit is required for evaluation.
  • Work on the system only by trained personnel and when de-energised.
